When telepathology provides a solution to laboratory restructuring

University Hospitals of South Paris is a hospital group consisting of three hospitals: Antoine Béclère, Bicêtre and Paul Brousse. These hospitals are major players in patient healthcare innovation and are benchmark facilities for numerous diseases in the southern part of the Ile-de-France region.


As well as their patient healthcare mission, the hospital group is also a leading teaching and research facility. The University Hospitals of South Paris are precursors within their field and have already incorporated a great number of innovations, particularly in imaging.

Encouraged by doctors invested in the development of the profession and its practices, digital pathology is being continuously developed for everyday use.

The solution :

The group’s pathology imaging has been managed by CaloPix for a number of years in terms of viewing and indexing images but also sharing them and remotely accessing them for any hospital thanks to the web-based application CaloPix Pocket.

Directly linked with the laboratory’s management system, CaloPix links images with patient records.  TRIBVN Healthcare has also equipping University Hospitals of South Paris with its macroscopic tool Macro by TRIBVN. Linked to CaloPix, it produces images of resected specimens and displays reports. As well as producing microscopic images using digital cameras, doctors also have scanners for creating digital slides. These are imported automatically from the scanner to the corresponding patient record and stored in the centralized image database.

With the introduction of digital slides into departments, doctors have been able to reorganize their work flow, in particular thanks the roll-out of the Tribvn Healthcare telepathology facility, designed for tele-extemporaneous examinations between the Paul Brousse and Bicêtre hospitals. This has helped solve the issue of distribution and availability of doctors between the sites. Extemporaneous diagnosis can now be done remotely by reading an on-screen digital slide and is further improved by close collaboration between doctors and technicians, who also have the benefit of video synchronization between sites for instant communication.

Plus, departmental doctors are now using imaging analysis algorithms developed by TRIBVN Healthcare for the quantification of hepatic fibrosis and the analysis of TMA slides.
